Pi Beta Phi’s commitment to literacy dates back more than 100 years to the founding of a Settlement School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Today, through its Read > Lead > Achieve® reading initiatives, Pi Phis continue the tradition of supporting children and families through literacy service. Read > Lead > Achieve is Pi Beta Phi’s philanthropic effort, which inspires a lifelong love of reading that can unlock true potential creating a more literate and productive society. The Fraternity’s Read > Lead > Achieve reading programs include: Arrow in the Arctic, which was established in 1967 and supports reading in Canada's Northern library systems; Champions are Readers®, established in 2003 is a unique reading enrichment program for students in prekindergarten through third grade; and a Fraternity Day of Service, which is held every year where all members are encouraged to participate in a reading program benefitting their local community and the Fraternity donates and delivers 150,000 books to children in need in collaboration with its partner First Book®.
